Follicular Unit Transplantation
A FUT hair transplant is a procedure used to gather hair follicles from the back of the patient’s head using a local anaesthetic. The surgeon uses precise techniques to remove an area of skin from the back of the head to be used in the FUT hair transplant procedure. Since these hair follicles come from you, they should not be rejected by your body when the procedure is complete.
A specially designed microscope is used to remove the follicles from the donor area. It is also used to create groups of one to four follicles. It is important that the skilled surgeon does this aspect of the procedure carefully in order to maximize the amount of follicles available for FUT hair transplant. When the dissection is complete, the follicles are placed in cold medical storage until implantation.
In preparing the implantation area, the surgeon uses the eye of a sculptor to place the follicles in the natural location and at the proper angles to give the right look. The goal is to establish a natural look to the hairline and for it to feel fuller and comfortable.
The four general steps in a hair transplant procedure are:
-
Gathering Donor FolliclesThe donor zone is identified and prepared for harvesting. There are two basic methods of harvesting your donor hair and FUT Strip Harvesting and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
-
Microscopic DissectionWith FUT Strip Harvest procedures, the donor strip is placed under the microscope which is designed specifically for hair restoration surgery. Then the donor strip is dissected into individual follicular units of one to four hairs.
-
Creation of Recipient SitesYour hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair growth treatment plan he has designed specifically for you. This is where artistry is key and separates an average result from an amazing result.
-
Placement of The Hair GraftsFinally, your hair grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp by a surgical technician who places each graft carefully and meticulously into those recipient sites. Surgical hair restoration is an outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthesia. To ensure precise results Enhance Hair Restoration utilizes either the WAW or ARTAS systems to remove follicles in an FUE.

Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation
Hair follicles are classified using numbers one to four. The number one follicles are used to populate the front area of the hairline and the areas around the temples. Number two follicles are used to fill in areas behind the number one grafts, while three and four level follicles are used in the remaining areas around the scalp, back, and sides. As the follicular hair unit transplantation process moves along, corrective measures are taken to alter any existing hair transplants and give the whole look an overall smooth appearance.
If patients experience any discomfort during the recovery period it is routinely controlled using oral medications. The patient spends the first 10 days of recovery following a strict regimen outlined by the surgeon that helps the follicles to embed into the recipient’s area. Once the surgeon discharges you, we expect that you will have achieved the best possible outcome, given the number of grafts the surgery yields. You can expect your new follicles to start growing around four months after FUT hair transplant surgery, and those follicles will continue to grow.
