Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Explained

An Overview

FUE hair transplant is an innovative form of hair transplant surgery which involves extracting individual hair follicles and placing them elsewhere on your body. It is a safe and highly effective form of hair transplant surgery: offering fantastic results with minimal scarring and side effects. At Enhance Hair Restoration, we offer FUE hair transplant treatment to both men and women. Carried out at our renowned clinic in Birmingham by expert and renowned surgeons, we offer phenomenal FUE hair transplant results at a highly competitive price.

The Procedure

Follicular unit extraction requires the utmost precision, which is why it is handled by surgeons with ample experience and expertise. Instead of dealing with strips of follicles, the performing surgeon handles individual follicle groups. Your FUE hair transplant is completed by creating 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm surgical incisions on the scalp where the follicles are to be removed.

In order for the process to be done correctly, the donor area on the patient’s head is completely shaved. After collecting and properly storing the grafts, the surgeon then prepares the transplant area with an eye towards artistically placing the grafts in ways that will look and feel natural. After this, the surgeon meticulously places the grafts in the transplant area to get the desired effect. One of the benefits of FUE is it gives the surgeon the option of removing individual follicles and placing them in such a way as to enhance the final effect.

It is an ideal procedure for:

Patients who traditionally wear their hair short, including those who shave their heads
Those who would not be adverse to having the transplant region shaved
Any patient who wants to avoid the appearance of a scar or those who scar easily
Patients who have had previous hair transplants and now experience tightness in the scalp

Patients who are not experiencing significant hair loss
Patients who are younger and require a less comprehensive procedure
Patients who have hair that is fine to the touch
Patients who will need to have a graft placed in an area with existing scars

Aftercare

FUE hair transplant results appear quicker than other methods. Due to the treatment being less invasive than other options, the initial recovery period should be complete within 10-14 days. The results will be visible immediately, but redness and swelling may be present for 5-7 days after treatment. Although this is visually unappealing, it is quickly resolved. The advised rest time for our patients after a FUE hair transplant is around 4-5 days. Patients can return to work immediately, should they wish. If possible, however, we would encourage some time off after your procedure to minimise interference with the healing process. Other post treatment recommendations include sleeping in an elevated position using a soft pillow for 10 days after surgery, waiting for 5 days before washing hair, avoiding harsh shampoos, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight for 7 days and avoiding strenuous activities such as sport.

Pros and Cons of FUE

While hair transplants completed with follicular unit extraction sounds like the ideal solution for a wide range of patient types, it actually does have its limitations. This type of procedure is not for every patient, and you need to consider the pros and cons of FUE before you get the procedure done.

Pros
• Minimal scarring
• Recovery time is much faster
• Reduced amount of pain and general discomfort when the process is complete
• Offers the option of a larger donor space
• Makes the process easier for patients prone to scarring
• Can be used to repair or alter existing scarred areas
• Expands the harvesting area to body and beard hair
• Can be more beneficial to younger patients
• Could be ideal for those who only need a frontal transplant

Cons
• The donor area must be shaved extremely close
• May not be suitable for patients not wanting to shave their hair
• Does not yield as many follicles as FUT
• Pricing tends to be more than other options
• The lack of fatty tissue on the grafts can decrease their survival rate

FAQs

  • How to Sleep After FUE Hair Transplant?

For a short while after your treatment, you may have to adjust how you sleep. This should only be for a few weeks whilst you are healing. You should sleep on your back at an incline for the first week. Following this, it is acceptable to sleep on your side as long as you do not put pressure on the side that has been operated on. You may wish to cover your pillow with a soft towel during this process, and you should ensure bedding, pillowcases and sheets are clean.

  • Is FUE Hair Transplant Safe?

Follicular unit extraction is a hair transplantation method that is safe and effective. It is less invasive than other methods, and leaves minimal scarring as well as no complications. Patients may experience some soreness, redness and/or swelling after the treatment, but this is to be expected. Within a week, any side effects should have subsided. When performed by experienced surgeons who offer excellent and thorough aftercare advice, a FUE hair transplant is safe and highly effective.

  • Is FUE Hair Transplant Painful?

In the case of FUE, as well as other methods such as FUT, there should be no pain during the procedure. Both are considered safe, effective and not particularly invasive. In most cases, the area where the transplant has taken place will be tender for a short period after: this is perfectly manageable. Over the counter painkillers are advised if the area is particularly tender.
