A Step-By-Step Guide To Facial Hair Loss Treatments

Even though the most common form of hair loss is male pattern baldness, not all hair loss affects the scalp. There may be many reasons why you may have facial hair loss, often unknown. If you’ve always had a patchy beard, chances are, it is linked to your genetics. Psychological or physical stress, hormonal imbalances or Alopecia barbae, an autoimmune condition, can also cause hairless patches on your face.

Beards have been getting more and more fashionable over recent years, and we have a generation of men who are embracing their facial hair. But what if you are not able to grow a beard? Almost half of men are unable to grow a full beard, so people who lack facial hair are now turning to getting a beard hair transplant.

Whatever the reason for a facial hair transplant, beard, eyebrows or sideburns, Enhance Hair Restoration can offer a range of facial hair treatments. The treatment at Enhance Hair Restoration is a minimally invasive procedure used to restore hair density on different areas of the face.

What is Alopecia barbae?

You may have heard of Alopecia, an autoimmune disorder which makes your hair fall out but what is Alopecia barbae? Alopecia barbae is the specific term for hair loss in the beard. Unlike male pattern baldness, which usually causes a receding hairline or bald spot on your crown, alopecia barbae causes you to lose small coin-sized patches along the jawline or on your neck. It can cause thin facial hair or no facial hair at all and in some rare cases, alopecia barbae can even cause you to lose all of your beard hair.

Beard hair transplant

With the popular trend of fuller beards and moustaches, here at Enhance hair, we have found the demand for treatment has become even more sought after. To complete your beard hair transplant, we remove hair from the scalp, mainly from the back of the head where it’s the thickest and most similar to a beard, and transplant it evenly on to the face. You might choose this procedure to enhance the thickness and evenness of your beard.

The surgery is straightforward but it will still require some downtime. In most cases, patients will need to take a week off work and will be able to shave again after two weeks but always follow the advice of your doctor.

Whatever your reasons for a beard hair transplant, we are happy to discuss the range of options available.

Eyebrow hair loss

As with any hair on your head, eyebrows can thin, fall out or stop growing for any number of reasons, such as over grooming, illness, natural aging or medical treatment. Eyebrows can enhance your natural features and frame your face and much emphasis is placed on the shape, thickness and colour of eyebrows these days. Not only that, eyebrow hair loss can prematurely age you, so eyebrow transplant surgery can give you a younger-looking appearance.

We can help restore thinning or damaged eyebrows to create natural-looking, realistic eyebrows. Here at Enhance Hair Restoration, this type of facial hair transplant surgery can be completed in only one session. Our doctors are experts in this type of procedure giving plenty of care and attention to place the hairs in the optimum position to achieve the best results.

Sideburn hair loss

At Enhance Hair Restoration, a sideburn transplant uses microsurgery to restore hair to the sides of your face where growth may be thin, patchy, or missing altogether. It may be performed to conceal acne scars or other types of scarring.

As with beard and eyebrow hair loss transplants, the hair can be harvested from the scalp and placed in the area in front of the ears. Your doctor will find the most appropriate area of the scalp that has the closest match to your existing sideburn hair.

Men often have this treatment to reintroduce sideburns, but sideburns hair transplants are also often performed on women after face lifts to restore the missing sideburn hair that has moved further back.

What is the process of facial hair loss treatment?

Only local anaesthesia is required to perform the facial hair treatment. For transplant, donor hair is taken from hair follicles located in the back of the scalp, where baldness is rare and is therefore termed dominant hair. The donor, or dominant, area extends from the lower part of the back of the scalp to the lower parts of the side scalp.

The doctor makes small incisions in the recipient sites: the beard, sideburn, or eyebrows. Then, the harvested healthy follicles are individually inserted in the required area with the process repeated many times to ensure a natural, full-bodied result.

Around two weeks after the procedure, the transplanted hairs will fall out, but then new hair will begin to grow, usually between two and four months after the procedure. In the case of transplanted eyebrows, the transplanted hairs don’t stop growing as they would if they were natural eyebrow hairs, so patients will need to trim the transplanted hairs to maintain consistency.

As facial hair loss can be progressive, sometimes over a number of years, the hair restoration doctor will also look at the possibility of future hair loss patterns, particularly in the younger man, before agreeing a course of action.
